Peru training crash


A Peruvian National Police Bell UH-1H with three aboard was en route from Tangier Island airport 8:05 p.m. when it crashed over an area of coca cultivation during night training.

The wreckage was located near Tingo Maria Peru on La Moyuna Mountain.

Base control indicated that before communication broke off at 8:00 pm, the helicopter was in distress.

The helicopter worked the area of ??Leoncio Prado and Alto Huallaga (Tingo María) under drug control in cooperation with the United States.

The three crew, two officers and a sergeant of the Peruvian police members were retrieved and taken to the air base in Tingo Maria. Search teams located the helicopter five minutes from a local police base.

Helicopter Crash off the Coast of Brazil

On March 27, 2013, a Líder Táxi Aéreo Bell 412SP was en route from Rio de Janeiro to an oil platform (Petrobras P-7 rig) with three people aboard when it made an emergency landing near an oil platform Bacia de Campos Brazil.

Líder Táxi Aéreo and Petrobras say it was a controlled landing.

The three crew were able to use a lifeboat.

The helicopter’s flotation device was activated and the chopper floated to the surface but capsized.

The owner of the helicopter made this statement:
The aircraft performed a controlled landing in the water near the platform Petrobras P-7. The three occupants of the aircraft were immediately rescued and are doing fine. The freighter Petrobras, with the technical leader, are already providing the withdrawal of aircraft and general cargo. All measures of investigation are ongoing and all bodies were triggered. We reiterate that all safety procedures, maintenance and training are up to date and used properly.

Petrobras reported the incident to the (Brazilian) ANP, Navy and Air Force who will be investigating.

Small Plane Crashes on Mar 23

On MARCH 23,2013:

  • a Romeo Aviation Beech A36 Bonanza crashed north of Cordova,IL after striking a power pole.
  • a Sky Dive City de Havilland Canada DHC-6-200 Twin Otter near Zephyrhills, FL flew 22 sky divers; one diver and one skydriver instructor died after a jump. Their bodies were found in woods near the airport.
  • A Natal Bell 206B-3 Jet Ranger III crashed in the Pietermaritzburg city center with five aboard. All five were injured, four hospitalized. No fatalities.

Zhersu Avia Emergency Landing, Kazakhstan

On Feb 15, 2013, a Zhersu Avia LLP Bell 206L3 made an emergency landing near the village of Bakanas in Kazakhstan. The helicopter spun and landed on its side but no injuries were reported.

The two Ukrainians aboard were not hurt.

The the Ministry of Transport and Communications in Kazakhstan will be investigating.

Borrowed Heli Hit by Wind


On Jan 30, 2013, a Pennsylvania State Police Bell B206 was returning from searching for a missing snowmobiler at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe when strong 60 mph winds blew it over.

The helicopter had landed and had been tied down for fueling when the wind blew it over.

The chopper was borrowed from Altuna and is currently out of service.

No one was injured except the helicopter.

Municipal Parks Crew injured, Pilot killed in São Paulo Crash


On Jan 21, 2013 at 12:45, a Helimarte Bell 206B JetRanger III en route in light rain from West Zone of São Paulo to Campo de Marte Airport with four people aboard flying over a residential area in the neighborhood of Garden Corner, crash landed on two houses in Paul Street Arentino in Jaragua in the north of São Paulo near Highway Taipas.

A resident saw the plane approaching and saw that the rear propeller stopped. Witnesses in the house say there were electrical lines entangled in the helicopter.

Civil Defense roped off four properties as unsafe.

One person aboard did not survive the crash and three others aboard, all crew, were injured but conscious when they were found. One person on the ground was also injured. Some reports say two on the ground were injured. There were four people in one house that was crashed into.

The sole fatality was the pilot, Stella Melo Marcelo Araujo, who was 29, was single and had no children. The helicopter was an air taxi but the objective was a two hour flyover inspecting, monitoring and surveying regional park areas.

Ramiro Levy (Depave-1), Bishop Fabian Barbosa (Depave-5) and Idevanir Souza (Communication), all employees of the Municipal Green and Environment were injured. Two crew members were taken to Hospital and Clinics and one to the Hospital São Camilo Emergency Room.

Five teams were sent to the crash to deal with the injured, the wreckage and the leak in the helicopter. The helicopter’s certificate valid until December 8, 2016 and had passed it’s recent maintenance inspection.

Helimarte, who operates the helicopter that crashed on Monday in ??Jaragua, north of Sao Paulo, said in a statement that the accident was the first in the fourteen year history of 35 000 flights. Everyone aboard was employed by the City of São Paulo.

Cropdusting Chopper Crash in S. Africa


On Jan 18, 2013, a private crop dusting Bell 47 helicopter near Dunstan Farrell TB hospital in Hibberdene S. Africa developed an engine problem.

A witness says the pilot struck a tree while spraying a field of ground nuts.

The ambulance company received the call at 9:00 a.m.

The pilot managed to land in a sugar cane field before the helicopter caught fire. The pilot escaped by pushing out the glass, and suffered minor injuries but the helicopter was a total loss. He was hospitalized. There wasn’t much more than the tail left remaining of the cropduster.

Rescue Pilot Rescued by Rescuees

After a boat rescue failed, on January 9, 2013, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger with only the pilot aboard was rescuing two Nunavut seal hunters, Joe Karetak, who is in his 50s, and his 20-year-old son, who were stranded off the west shore of Hudson Bay. The brutal wind chill was -50 C.

The helicopter was from Customs Helicopter in Gillam Manitoba.

The hunters had left on snow mobiles but hadn’t returned home, initiating the search.

The helicopter landed safely but broke through the ice—it was partially on ice, partially in the water 100 meters from the hunters.

The pilot was rescued by the hunters.

A second helicopter assisting in the original rescue took the hunters and the pilot to Arviat. The rescue was coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

Medical Evac Flight Crew Lost In Iowa Chopper Crash

Why: A Mercy Air Med medical helicopter crash was en route to pick up a patient when it crashed on Wednesday at 9 p.m killing Pilot Gene Grell, paramedic Russell Piehl, and Nurse Shelly Lair-Langenbau. The pilot had 2,800 hours flight time.

The weather at the time was a light freezing drizzle, fog and mist at 8 p.m. at the Mason City airport, 27 degrees, and overcast conditions at 9 p.m.

The patient was taken by ambulance to Mercy-North Iowa Hospital.

The helicopter service of Mercy Medical Center-North that employed the pilot is Med-Trans. The nurse and paramedic worked for the hospital.

The crash occurred fifteen miles from where it took off. The helicopter did not have a black box but it did have a tracking satellite system. The Bell 407 was new in April 2011 and had night-vision goggles, a terrain warning system and a satellite tracking system.

The NTSB and FAA are investigating. Weather is being investigated as a possible cause. There was no SOS or emergency communication from the helicopter. The wreckage will probably be relocated on Jan 4 2013. Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department is keeping the site secure.

Four Survive Bell Crash in Ruthi Switzerland


Dec 20, 2012, at 16:30 a Bell UH-1D Huey en route from Balzers to St. Gallen, Switzerland developed engine problems.

The pilot touched down with skids, bounced, and crashed into a cottage in Rüthi in the Rhine valley about 200 meters from the highway. The gearbox and rotor were ten meters from the body of the helicopter.

The four people aboard the helicopter were hospitalized with minor injuries. Rescue services considered the damage to the helicopter and said that it was lucky there were no fatalities.

Bell Chopper Collision in Pasadena

Why: As one police helicopter tookoff and another one was landing, the rotors of both helicopters touched, causing a collision and crash.

Both helicopters were damaged. Six people were hospitalized.

One helicopter crew was on regular patrol.

One helicopter was monitoring UCLA-Southern California football game traffic.

The weather conditions at the time were cloudy with a drizzle of rain. The NTSB is investigating.

Pocono Helicopter Crash Investigation Underway

Why: The Tuesday wreck piloted by a full time American Airlines pilot (part time with ACS Helicopter LLC) was discovered at 2:30 a.m. wednesday. The helicopter encountered bad weather as it passed through northern Monroe County. Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport is not equipped for receiving distress calls.

The helicopter was found on its right side, leaking fluids, with broken rotor and tail.

Fatalities of the crash were Pilot William Ellsworth, 52, of Califon, N.J., and passenger Tighe Sullivan, 51, of Darien, Conn.

Pintail Lodge Helicopter Crashes in Louisiana

Why: A helicopter out of Texas was flying low over a Crowly Louisiana field when it made contact with a KSIG radio guidewire.

The helicopter subsequently crashed in the field. Local residents who heard the impact described a thud.

The pilot was identified as Hugh Clifton Kelley, 66, of Beaumont.

Foz de Iguazu Helicopter Accident

Why: Taking off from the entrance of the National Park of Iguaçu,Foz do Iguaçu in western Paraná, the helicopter had a problem at the helipad and fell from a height of five feet.

The company that owns the helicopter is a concessionaire of the National Paraque selling air tours over the Iguazu Falls.

The four aboard the helicopter were wounded. The chopper was described as badly damaged. Three men and one woman were rushed to Hospital Costa Cavalcanti and to City hospital. There was one crewman aboard. The three passengers were tourists.

Helicopter Down at Mammoth

Why: Two Asplundh employees were working on power lines and crashed near the lake causing a small fire. They were taken to Mammoth Airport and ambulanced to Mammoth Hospital. They suffered minor injuries.

According to the FAA preliminary report, the rotorcraft tail rot0r struck the ground and crashed 12 miles from Mammoth lakes California.

Mono County Sheriff’s Department, Mammoth Lakes Fire Department, Long Valley Fire Department, Cal Fire, U.S. Forest Service, and Mono County Paramedics responded to the scene.

One Fatality in Mexican Lake while Tourism Video Filming Underway, No Academy Actors Involved.

Why: The Helicopter was filming a promotional tourism video when it crashed in Lake Zirahuen. Four aboard were injured. There was one fatality.

The aircraft became entangled with a tension wire, used as ziplining.

Despite the rumor, no members of the cast of “The Academy’ television show were aboard. The rumor appeared apparently after tweets immediately following the accident.

The injured were reported as Enrique Barragán, Carlos Vela, Pablo Gabriel Angulo and Luis Fernando Gutiérrez. Daniel Martinez was initially reported as missing, then later as a fatality.

THe helicopter is owned by the State of Michoacan.

Chopper Rolls Head over Heels in India

Why: On landing, the helicopter crashed and rolled. The pilot and one passenger were extricated from the chopper and rushed to the hospital. One of the passengers was Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu who was scheduled to speak at Godhra Science College.

California Crop Duster Crashes in Orchard

Why: 8 a.m. Monday a cropduster crashed in an orchard. According to his son, the 71-year-old pilot, Bill Cavanaugh, has 20,000 hours of flying.

Cavanaugh sustained injuries and was hospitalized at San Joaquin General Hospital.

Why: The pilot had picked his passenger to take him to Sydney Adventist Hospital apparently without checking weather reports which resulted in the Bell helicopter crashing in a cliff. Inclement weather and hazardous conditions in Lane Cove National Park led to the decision to call off the recovery operation on July 22, 2012, the same inclement conditions which caused the accident. Businessman Bruce Campbell, 65, and freelance pilot Colin Greenwood died in the crash at the foot of 15m cliff in Lane Cove National Park.

Twelve Fatalities in Royal Brunei Air Force Helicopter Crash

Search Continues for Pilot and Crew Missing in Papua New Guinea

Why: A helicopter is missing in Papua New Guinea. The pilot Russell Aikten recently achieved some fame after rescuing victims of the “Black Saturday” fire, and used to fly the Westpac Surf Life Saving Rescue Helicopter.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Hevilift are deploying teams to search for Captain Aikten, Chief pilot Antony Annan, and engineer Emmett Fynn. They left a mayday call about five minutes after leaving the InterOil Drill Rig site at 3.25pm Friday. They were en route to Creek to re-fuel and flying in an area reported to have low visibility at the time.

After days of searching, nothing has been found. Tuesday searchers will be using a helicopter fitted with a magnetometer, used to detect large mineral deposits. They hope it will pick up metal from the missing aircraft. The Australian Defence Force will be deploying two Blackhawks to assist in the search, in addition to the aero-medical evacuation team, additional observers and a downed aircraft recovery team.

Bell Crash in Switzerland


What: HeliSwiss Bell Jet Ranger training flight

Why: Three Swiss pilots, one of them a flight instructor leading the training flight crashed after hitting a wire.

The flight went missing at 5:45, after which a search continued until darkness in the rugged terrain was too dangerous.

The Heliswiss helicopter crashed into a tributary of the Kander Valley. The site of the impact is a steep, wooded, rocky slope in Tschaggenten-Alp, an area with poor reception, which is hindering recovery services.

After a fire was spotted, rescue teams were flown in, halted overnight (with only security guards on hand) and recovery begun again May 25th.

A team has been assembled to care for the family members.
