Home built Crashes, Kills Pilot

What: “experimental high wing” or home-built single-engine plane registered to William McDuffie of Louisiana
Where: East Texas near a landfill between Longview and Kilgore.
When: Discovered Monday afternoon
Who: Ronald Vickers of Arlington died in the crash. Death was pronounced on the scene.
Why: Prior to crashing, the plane made contact with the power lines. The right wing susustained damage. Ronald Vickers was about halfway through the 350 mile trip from Oak Ridge, La to taking his newly purchased plane home to Texas. It is not known why he was flying low.

Oakland Plane Crash under Investigation

What: PZL 104 WILGA (experimental ) built in 1980 and last certified for flight in May 2000
Where: 9 MILES FROM OAKLAND, CA crashed onto a hill on the north end of Lake Chabot
When: 01/03/2009 2 p.m. Saturday
Who: pilot Thierry Thys of Oakland was injured.
Why: The crash is under investigation by the NTSB.

Small Experimental Plane Makes Emergency Landing on Pennsylvania Turnpike


What: Small experimental airplane registered to Michael Hannagan en route from Endicott, New York to Atlanta, Georgia.
Where: Emergency Landing near Pennsylvania Turnpike south of the Newville Exit, in rural Cumberland County.
When: Thursday 1 o’clock
Who: The unnamed pilot walked away from the crash.
Why: The pilot lost half power, attempted to land on the turnpike but struck a tractor ahead of him. FAA is investigating

Australia Kit Crash update

What: kit-built Thorpe-T18 engaged in a biennial flight review
Where: south of Perth
When: Thursday last week.
Who: pilot Fred Murray and pilot examiner Allan Hayes, both fatalities
Why: The plane crashed after it clipped trees about a kilometre from the Serpentine airfield.

The pilot Mr Murray spent 20 years working with Aboriginal people and will be missed.

Ultralight crash in Arizona


What: ultralight/motorized glider en route from Mexico
Where: over Arizona Border crashed in a lettuce field about one mile from the Colorado River.
When: 7:15 a.m
Who: San Luis
Why: The pilot died as a result of injuries to the head. He was carrying 140 lbs of pot.

Cedar Fort Crash Update

What: home-built airplane classified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an experimental aircraft
Where: Cedar Fort
When: Tuesday just after 11 a.m.
Who: pilot, 62-year-old David Silfvast, from Salt Lake, and his passenger, 71-year-old David Edgerly both killed in the crash
Why: Under Investigation

There have been six deadly crashes in Utah since the middle of July killing 21.

Experimental Crash in NC

What: 300-pound experimental aircraft taking off from Hiatt Airport
Where: neighborhood off Myrtle Drive in Thomasville, Davidson County
When: just after 5:30 p.m. November 1, 2008
Who: Pilot John Jones. There were no passengers
Why: The pilot walked away after the crash.

Washington Plane Crash


What: Stinson 108 built in 1946 registered to a Bellevue address.
Where: near Concrete near the intersection of SR20 and Russell Road Skagit County
When: 10 p.m. Wednesday
Who: 71-year-old Wayne “Red” Smith of Bellevue was killed. His two passengers were identified as a 46-year-old Craig Foster of Sequim a 43-year-old Veronica Parker of Seattle.
Why: The injured were taken to Skagit Valley Hospital then flown to Harborview in Seattle where they are reported to be in satisfactory condition. The passengers were returning from purchasing a dissembled plane.

2 Camarillo Crashes in a week


What: Experimental aircraft with a single engine
Where: Ventura County’s Camarillo Airport.
When: Tuesday
Who: Pilot and passenger
Why: The plane had experienced mechanical problems and on return overshot the runway and flipped over just past the landing strip. No injuries.

This should not be confused with a similar incident Monday when another single-engine plane was towing a banner, flipped and the pilot was killed.
